Ask ten dealers how to get more leads and nine will say "advertise more". It's usually the wrong first move. South Africa's used-car market has no shortage of buyers: AutoTrader alone serves hundreds of millions of searches a year. The dealers who feel starved of leads are almost never short of interest. They're leaking it, at the moments that decide where the buyer actually spends their R130 000.

So here's the honest playbook, in the order that pays. Fix the leaks first, then pour on the traffic.

First, understand where your leads actually come from

Every dealership lead arrives down one of two pipes:

  • Rented leads come from the marketplaces: AutoTrader, Cars.co.za, Facebook Marketplace. You pay a subscription, your cars sit next to 20 identical ones, and the buyer belongs to the platform, not to you.
  • Owned leads come to you: buyers who Google your dealership by name, land on your own site, walk in off a review, or come back because they bought from you before.

Rented leads aren't bad, they're just capped: the price rises every year and you compete on price by design. Owned leads compound. Every move below is about shifting the mix toward leads you own. If you want the full argument, we've written it up in own your buyers, don't rent them.

1. Fix the shortlist leak before buying traffic

92% of South African car buyers research online before they ever contact a dealer. They build a shortlist of two or three dealerships, and they do it quietly: your phone never rings for the ones you lose, so the leak is invisible.

Here's the behaviour that matters: a buyer sees your car on a marketplace, then Googles your dealership before they'll drive out or pay a deposit, because this is a market full of scams and they're about to hand over six figures. If what they find is a dated site, a thin Facebook page or nothing at all, they don't email you to complain. They just pick the dealer who looked legitimate.

A fast, credible dealership website with your live stock, real reviews and a real address is the gate every other lead source flows through. That's why it's step one and not step five: run ads before you fix this, and you're paying to send buyers to the exact page that loses them.

2. Answer first. The first dealer to respond usually wins

The average dealership takes around 42 hours to respond to a web enquiry, and 78% of buyers purchase from whoever responds first. Read those two numbers together and the cheapest lead source in the business appears: the enquiries you already get.

An enquiry that lands at 8pm on a Tuesday and gets answered at 11am Thursday isn't a lead, it's a donation to the dealer down the road. Before you spend another rand on advertising, tighten this:

  • Every enquiry must land somewhere someone actually watches: WhatsApp, not an inbox nobody opens.
  • Someone owns the reply. One named person, with a target of minutes, not days.
  • Every enquiry gets logged against the car it came from, so nothing slips and you can see what's working.

3. Make WhatsApp the front door

South African buyers live on WhatsApp, and the dealers winning online have accepted it. A one-tap "I'm interested in this car" button on every vehicle page converts far better than a contact form buried on a contact page, because it meets the buyer where they already are and it takes five seconds on a phone.

Done properly, every tap is also captured: name, number and the exact car logged into a system you own, not just a chat that scrolls away. That log becomes your follow-up list and, later, your remarketing audience.

4. Work your Google Business Profile like it's a salesperson

When a buyer Googles your dealership name, the panel on the right decides whether you look real. It's free, and most dealers ignore it. The routine is simple: keep name, address and phone identical everywhere; load real photos of the actual lot; and ask every happy buyer for a review while they're still holding the keys. A dealership with forty recent reviews beats a competitor with four, every time, before either of you spends a cent on ads.

5. Now put money behind it, on your own site

Once the site converts and the response process is tight, paid traffic stops being a gamble and starts being arithmetic. Meta (Facebook and Instagram) ads are the workhorse for SA dealerships: buyers scroll there daily, targeting by area works, and you can start at a few hundred rand a day.

Two rules make the difference between ads that sell cars and ads that burn budget:

  • Send clicks to your own site, not a marketplace. Paying Meta to send buyers to AutoTrader is paying twice to rent the same audience.
  • Track to the lead, not the like. Pixel on the site, every ad tagged, every lead logged with its source. If you can't see which ad produced which enquiry, you can't scale the winner or kill the loser.

This is exactly what our dealership marketing service is built around: ads pointed at a site you own, measured all the way to the enquiry.

6. Re-sell the buyers you already paid for

Every past enquiry and every past buyer is a lead you've already paid for once. A dealer with a proper database can message previous enquirers when matching stock arrives ("a 2019 Fortuner just came in, you asked about one in March") and reach past buyers when they're due for an upgrade. It costs almost nothing, and it's only possible if your enquiries have been captured and logged all along, which is why steps 2 and 3 come first.

The order matters more than the tactics

Traffic into a leaking funnel just makes the leak more expensive. Run it in this order instead:

  1. A credible site that survives the "Google them first" check
  2. Fast, owned, WhatsApp-first capture on every car
  3. A Google profile with real reviews
  4. Paid ads into your own site, fully tracked
  5. Follow-up and remarketing on the database you build
