Is a website a once-off cost or a monthly cost?
Usually both: websites in South Africa are sold either as a once-off build plus monthly hosting, or as a single monthly fee that bundles the site, hosting and changes.
On the monthly side, SME Rocket's survey put the average web hosting fee at R107 a month. New Perspective Studio lists basic hosting and maintenance at R299 to R499 a month, and a .co.za domain renewal at R150 to R300 a year, paid separately. The Webster sells plumber sites on a monthly plan from R250 a month with no setup fee.
Neither model is automatically cheaper. Add up the total over two or three years, then ask the question that matters more than the price: who owns the domain and the site if you stop paying?
How much does a small business website cost in South Africa?
For a small business site of three to ten pages, published South African prices run from about R4,500 to R10,000 once-off, before monthly hosting.
That is the range G Web Design publishes for three to ten pages. New Perspective Studio's five to nine page small business site sits inside it at R5,590, and SME Rocket's average for a five-page site, R6,254, lands in the same band.
The published packages list pages, a contact form, a WhatsApp button and on-page SEO. Custom features such as bookings, stock feeds, payments or a client login are not part of them, so expect those to be quoted separately.
What drives the price of a website?
Six things move the price: the number of pages, whether the design is custom, the features, what the site connects to, who prepares the content, and what support follows launch.
Two quotes with the same headline number can buy very different things. One may be a few pages on a template with your logo dropped in; another may include a page for every service, enquiry tracking and a link into your booking system.
- Pages: one per service, and one per area you want to be found in.
- Design: an adapted template, or a design made for your brand and photos.
- Features: a form and WhatsApp, or bookings, payments and logins.
- Connections: stock feeds, a CRM, accounting or a booking system.
- Content: whether you supply the words and photos, or they are planned with you.
- After launch: hosting only, or changes, fixes and backups as well.
Why do some websites cost R50,000 or more?
The top of the market pays for custom design, many pages, integrations and ongoing work: SME Rocket's survey found published prices as high as R56,350.
A site for a business with many services and areas, or one that has to connect to stock, bookings or finance systems, takes far more hours than a five-page brochure. So does a site designed from scratch rather than adapted from a theme.
Paying more only makes sense if the extra work earns its keep: more enquiries, less admin, or a system that replaces a spreadsheet. Ask what each extra line on a quote is for.
What should a website quote include?
A good website quote names every page and feature, who supplies the content, who owns the domain and hosting, what the monthly fee covers, and whether VAT is included.
Ask every provider to itemise, then compare line by line. If a quote will not say what is included, assume it is the smaller version. Social Agencies sends one fixed, itemised quote after a short call, so the full cost is known before anything starts.
- Each page, named.
- Every feature and connection, listed.
- Who writes the words and supplies the photos.
- The domain, the hosting and who owns each account.
- What the monthly fee covers, and how to cancel.
- Whether the price includes VAT.
